Babe Ruth’s Iconic ‘Called Shot’ Jersey Up for Auction

Babe Ruth, the larger-than-life figure of baseball lore, is once again making headlines with the upcoming auction of his iconic “called shot” jersey. Considered one of the most storied artifacts in baseball history, this gray road flannel is estimated to be worth a jaw-dropping $30 million, potentially making it the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold.

The jersey’s roots can be traced back to a defining moment nearly 92 years ago at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series, where Ruth famously pointed towards the outfield before smacking a home run against the Chicago Cubs. This legendary event has captivated fans for decades, shrouded in mystery and debate. However, the jersey’s authenticity has been bolstered by photo matching from two reputable companies, adding to its mystique and value.

Initially sold in 2005 for $944,000 by Grey Flannel Auctions, the jersey has since undergone meticulous conservation work by the Textile Conservation Workshop. This restoration not only repaired a tear but also preserved the jersey’s original condition, maintaining its historical significance. Additionally, the jersey perfectly aligns with the style worn by the Yankees in 1932, further validating its authenticity.

Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, emphasized the unparalleled importance of Ruth’s World Series jersey in the realm of sports memorabilia. Ivy noted, “Ruth’s World Series jersey is the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia to be offered at auction in decades. It will hold the record as the most expensive sports collectible ever to cross the auction block.”

The current record for the most expensive sports collectible is held by a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card, which fetched $12.6 million at Heritage Auctions in 2022. Moreover, the highest amount paid for a Ruth jersey stands at $5.6 million for a circa 1928-1930 model, sold at Yankee Stadium in 2019 through Hunt Auctions.

The meticulous analysis of the jersey’s provenance and distinctive features, including button placement and unique stains, has been pivotal in validating its authenticity. Authenticators like MeiGray have scrutinized these details, treating each game-worn jersey as distinct as a fingerprint. This attention to detail provides bidders with concrete evidence supporting the jersey’s claim to fame.

Ruth’s “called shot” home run continues to resonate as a pivotal moment in baseball history, characterized not only by its dramatic nature but also by the enduring legend it has cultivated. Despite the various accounts of the event, Ruth’s boldness and on-field prowess that day further cemented his legacy. The jersey will be showcased at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland this summer before the highly anticipated auction scheduled for August 23-25.

The sale of Ruth’s legendary jersey not only commemorates a significant chapter in sports history but also amplifies the fervor surrounding high-value sports memorabilia. Collectors and enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to own a tangible piece of baseball folklore, underscoring the enduring allure of sports relics that transcend time.
